Leon Atkins at 79 years old is probably one the last original Alabama Bluesmen still out there shakin his tail feathers.
He was awarded the monicker L'il Jimmy Reed by an audience in the 1960s when by chance the 'real' Jimmy Reed was due to play one of the better end clubs in his home town. The legend goes that Jimmy Reed who was a hero of young Leon, got mortal drunk before the show and was unable to stay upright. The panicking promoter drafted in Leon who was familiar with the legends entire body of work and he set about living the dream of being Jimmy Reed.
With a back story that good why wouldn't he keep the name, every bluesman needs one.
