OUTLINE AND ITINERARY
HAWKSHEAD
Hawkshead dates back to Norse times and was once owned by Furness Abbey up until the disollution of the Monasteries. From that time, it has flourished as a market town, ideally situated just North of Windermere. Spend some time exploring the collection of higgledy-piggledy houses, archways, and squares beloved by William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.
LITTLE and GREAT LANGDALE’S
The Langdales is a superb home to some of the most dramatic and diverse scenery in the whole of Cumbria (if not Britain!) hosting some of the most photogenic scenery around. Weather permitting we’ll drive the “loop” of “Little Switzerland” and even attempt a summit on foot to work up an appetite (for food or more scenery!)
GRASMERE
Most of the buildings date from the 19th or early 20th Century, though the Church dates from the 13th Century. William Worsdworth, who died in 1850, and his wife Mary, who died 9 years later, have tombstone in the churchyard of St Oswald's Church, one of the most visited literary shrines in the world.
SARAH NELSON’S GINGERBREAD SHOP
This tiny, aroma-flooded quaint shop with happy costumed staff is neatly tucked away at the corner of the churchyard. You’ll browse through, soak up the history, and then sample this most wonderful delicacy before ladling yourself down with bags of the stuff to distribute proudly to your friends (if it lasts that long)!
SURPRISE VIEW
If you want to find one spot that really encapsulates the Lake District, this is it. With superb views of both Derwent Water and Basenthwaite Lake to make up the panoramic view, we are sure you will take away nothing but fond memories from this delightful spot.
PACKHORSE BRIDGE
A Packhorse Bridge is exactly what it says it is, a bridge built for Packhorses to cross streams and gulleys and this is a beautiful example of such a bridge.
BOWDER STONE
Prepare to be amazed when you see this 2000 ton stone rock in a state of perfect balance. Thousands of years ago, when the glaciers in the area receded, this huge chunk of rock toppled down the mountain until it reached its final resting place. Standing over 30 feet in height and about 50 feet across, you will surely be impressed at this wonderous fluke of nature in balance.
CASTLERIGG STONE CIRCLE
A superb example of a Neolithic stone circle set in the breath-taking scenery of the Lake District with a view of a number of the surrounding mountains and hills. Stand in the centre of the circle and feel the mystical energy flow from the ground up through your body.
ULSWATER TO AMBLESIDE
After a day of exploring the amazing scenery in the Lake District, we are going to show you some more examples of why the area is so popular. We will travel past Ulswater and onto the Kirkstone Pass as we head back to Ambleside. Time and weather permitting, we will make one or two stops so you can take those last photographs to remind you of a great day out sightseeing - BusyBus Style!
